Niagara Region businesses cutting millions of kilowatt hours, says Alectra

‘Energy Savings Champion Awards’ prove energy efficiency makes good business sense

HAMILTON / ST. CATHARINES, ON, May 2, 2017 – Alectra Utilities Corporation recognized 11 top-performing customers and contractors for implementing innovative energy conservation and demand management projects involving retrofits, lighting fixtures and heating and cooling systems.

Together, these companies reduced their combined electricity consumption by almost 21 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) over the last two years, the equivalent of removing 2,300 homes off the grid for a year.

Alectra Utilities (formerly Horizon Utilities) held its fifth annual Energy Savings Champion Awards breakfast at the Grand Olympia Hospitality & Convention Centre in Stoney Creek on Tuesday morning to honour business customers across the St. Catharines and Hamilton area for their commitment to conservation.

“We are pleased to recognize these local businesses with Energy Savings Champion Awards for demonstrating leadership in conservation and demand management,” said Raegan Bond, VP, Conservation Demand Management, Alectra Utilities. “These community leaders realize it makes good business sense to use the expertise and incentives that Alectra Utilities offers to reduce energy use and save money in their companies.”

During the fifth annual Energy Savings Champion Awards ceremonies, Alectra Utilities presented awards in the following categories:

  • Channel Ally Award: Electromart Inc.
  • Lighting: GM Canada – St. Catharines Propulsion Plant
  • HVAC / Refrigeration: M&M Meats Ltd.
  • VFD Motors: Birla Carbon – Columbian Chemicals Canada Ltd.
  • Compressed Air: Taylor Steel Inc.

The Energy Innovation Award was presented to Skyline. Introduced this year, this award recognizes a business customer that embraces innovative technologies and sets a benchmark for energy management and conservation.

The following business customers were added to the “Million Kilowatt Hour Club,” acknowledging their savings of over one million kWh.

  • City of St. Catharines
  • Orlick Industries Ltd.
  • Effort Trust
  • Fortino’s Ltd.
  • Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board

The annual awards breakfast featured a special address from guest speaker David Paterson, Vice President, Corporate & Environmental Affairs, General Motors Canada.
